First edition, 8vo, pp. [4], iii, [3], 360; half-title not preserved; engraved folding map (slightly miscreased) with route outlined in red; recent brown cloth with gilt lettering, call numbers and Newberry Library seal on the spine; Newberry bookplate marked withdrawn, perforated stamp in the bottom margin of the title page; a good, sound copy with no external markings. Using the railroads the author traveled cross-country and back from Quebec to California and Utah, and return via St. Louis and Washington. Chapter IX is devoted entirely to Mormonism.
