From February to September 1879 he and his men travelled from the DeGrey River on the northwest coast of Western Australia to the Overland Telegraph line in Central Australia, which opened up a very large area of pastoral country for future settlers. In 1979 the Alexander Forrest Centenary Expedition followed the route taken in 1879 and the two most significant discoveries were the finding of the F69 tree near King Sound and the F197 tree at the Depot Camp 100 miles west of the Overland Telegraph Line. On the 31st of August 1979, exactly one hundred years after Forrest and Hicks reached the telegraph line, a plaque was placed on a cairn at that point approximately 32 miles north of Daly Waters. This edition, published by Corkwood Press in 1990, makes his journal (originally published in 1880) available to all interested in the exploration of Australia.
