Sobre este item

New York - London: Whittlesey House - McGraw Book Company , 1942. Copyright 1942 by the McGraw-Hill Book Company; no other dates. Rare first edition. Fine navy full cloth boards, gilt spine titles, light cover, corner wear. Deckled pages very good, no writing; moderate toning at endpapers. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Sharp very good first edition. By the author of "Economics in One Lesson," Henry Hazlitt, a noted conservative journalist, wrote "A New Constitution Now" in 1942. His main critique was that World War II was pointing out several of the Constitution's weaknesses. Like many before him, he advocated the parliamentary/cabinet model and changes in the powers of the President. Presented from a perspective of the miliieu following America's prior reluctant entrance into the conflict following the dramatic events of Pearl Harbor. The Senate would become more like the House of Lords, Senators and the President would be appointed, and Congress would have the vote of no confidence. He noted that his ideal was probably too sweeping, and proposed several less severe reforms such as the line item veto, and setting a retirement age for Supreme Court justices. Above all, though, he felt the amendment process needed particular attention, recommending majority ratification over super-majorities. While generally a clear thinker, many would argue the strictures are in place to preserve the Constitutional Republic without easy opportunity for nefarious alteration. Includes bibliography and detailed five-page index. Printed in the United States of America. 297 pages. Insured post.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
