Sobre este item

Pittsburgh: Printed and Published by Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, 1811.. 296pp. including twenty-eight full-page woodcut maps. 12mo. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine leather heavily rubbed and worn, boards rubbed, corners worn, some splitting to joints. Light scattered foxing to text with some occasional pencil annotations. Some offsetting throughout. Small ownership label and another ownership stamp in purple ink to front pastedown. About very good, in unsophisticated condition. Styled "Seventh Edition" on the title page, but actually the fifth known edition, after those of 1802, 1804, 1806, and 1808. The first two of these exist in a few copies only. The present edition is considerably larger than preceding ones, with a woodcut map of Pittsburgh, thirteen woodcut maps of the Ohio, and thirteen of the Mississippi. There is also an appendix containing much information on the Lewis and Clark expedition, first included in the 1808 edition. Cramer's guide was the first navigational guide to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

This copy contains the book label of S.E. Morse, likely Sidney Edwards Morse (1794-1871). Morse was the son of noted minister and geographer Jedidiah Morse and, like his father, went on to publish a number of popular geography textbooks. HOWES C855. STREETER SALE 994. SABIN 17385. SERVIES 818. BUCK 59. RISTOW, pp.236-37. BRADFORD 1112. REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 24 (ref).
