Scarce hardcover copyright 1885; first edition; withdrawal from Scranton Public Library with library accession date of January, 1892; has usual stamps and stickers and writing on a couple pages; original pictorial boards show heavy wear to outside edge in front (see photo); spine reinforced with book tape; faint damp-staining to top edge of several pages; maps are present but brittle and a couple have torn along crease; 536 pages, tanned from age EWLR.

Good: skillfully recased, preserving decorative cover design and spine title, new endpapers, title page missing, paper library label to spine, contains a number of illustrations and 6 maps including 3 fold-out, pages tanning with minor water stains to top edge and small stain to fore-edge, else internally very good clean condition with tight rebinding. 536pp.

Dark green cloth, front cover illus. in gilt and lettered in black, spine panel lettered in gilt. xx,536,4 pp., illus. w/ color frontis., 6 maps including 3 folding, reproductions of engravings, drawings in text. Minimally ex-library copy, clear-coated spine panel and joints which has darkened with age, handwritten call number on lower spine, discarded stamp on front fixed endsheet and discarded slip mounted to rear flyleaf. Appears not to have circulated and shows only minor shelf wear, with slight chipping at head of spine, small area of surface loss at top corner of front flyleaf. Text block is a bit toned by age. Very firm, intact binding. One map shows minor raggedness along edges owing to having been improperly folded. Decently preserved copy with relatively minor faults..

Small traces of wear along the spine edges, previous owner's name in pencil dated "Aug 265/85," one small edge tear on a map, Very Good Plus. Forbes traveled different routes and territories than A. R. Wallace, who preceded him to the East Indies. All maps called for are present and in nice condition. The beautiful chromolithograph frontispiece is present with its tissue guard.
