Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English author who specialised in adventure fiction set in exotic locations, primarily Africa. He was a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. This historical novel, following the early life of the hero Umslopogaas, is said to have been inspired by the time Haggard spent in South Africa, between 1875 and 1882. Illustrated throughout by Charles H. M. Kerr (1858-1907), who provided illustrations for many other novels by Haggard. 24-page publisher's catalogue to the rear.
