Sobre este item

Harper [An Imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers], 2007. First edition. Stated. First printing [stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Fair. Deborah Feingold (Jacket photograph). xii, 289, [1] pages. Illustrations. DJ has a portion missing at the back cover. Inscribed by the author on the title page. Inscription reads To Steve Pozniak--With best wishes! Clarence Thomas. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush and confirmed by the U. S. Senate, and is the second African American to serve on the Court. Since 2018, Thomas has served as the Senior Associate Justice, the longest-serving member of the Court, with a tenure of 29 years, 79 days as of January 10, 2021. Thomas was educated at the College of the Holy Cross and Yale Law School. In 1979, he became a legislative assistant to United States senator John Danforth, and in 1981 he was appointed Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan appointed Thomas Chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In 1990, President George H. W. Bush nominated Thomas to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He served in that role for 16 months before filling Marshall's seat on the Supreme Court. Thomas's confirmation hearings were bitter and intensely fought, centering on an accusation that he had sexually harassed attorney Anita Hill, a subordinate at the Department of Education and the EEOC. The Senate confirmed Thomas by 52-48. Supreme Court experts describe Thomas's jurisprudence as textualist, stressing the original meaning of the United States Constitution and statutes. Provocative, inspiring, and unflinchingly honest, this book relates the life story of one of Americas most remarkable and controversial leaders--Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas--in his own words. Thomas speaks out, revealing the pieces of his life he holds dear, detailing the suffering and injustices he has overcome, including the acrimonious and polarizing Senate hearing involving a former aide, Anita Hill, and the depression and despair it created in his own life and the lives of those closest to him. In this candid and deeply moving memoir, a quintessential American tale of hardship and grit, Clarence Thomas recounts his astonishing journey for the first time.
