Chicago: Nelson-Hall Company, 1973. First Edition. Signed presentation copy to film director John Schlesinger, inscribed by the author: “John, Don’t miss the epigraph on p. IX! Gene Phillips.” With Schlesinger’s blindstamp. In the inscription, Phillips is referring to a quote by Mr. Schlesinger on a preliminary page: “It is difficult to be freely creative in something that calls itself an industry.” Schlesinger is mentioned throughout the text and enjoys a chapter all to himself with critical reference to his acclaimed films, including Midnight Cowboy, A Kind of Loving, Sunday, Bloody Sunday, Billy Liar, Darling, and Far from the Madding Crowd. Oblong format, 10 1/4” x 8 1/4”, 249 pages, with bibliography and index. Illustrated. Near fine copy with a trace of use in a lightly used dust jacket with some tape repaired tears, a bit of dust soiling, and some fading to the spine. Other directors featured in the book include, Charlie Chaplin, Howard Hawks, George Cukor, George Stevens, Fred Zinneman, Stanley Kubrick, David Lean, Carol Reed, Joseph Losey, Brian Forbes, Ken Russell, and cinematographer James Wong Howe.
