Sobre este item

Lexington, Kentucky: Privately Printed (1st Edition, 1966). Seven-page staple-bound pamphlet with red covers. Like new condition.

When "Miss Belle" Breezing died, Time magazine devoted practically all of its obituary column to the passing of the "famed Lexington, Kentucky proprietress of the most orderly of disorderly houses." In this pamphlet, William H. Townsend recounts the story of his visit to Madam Belle Breezing's house in the quest of some books, as well as to get a first-hand picture of the aging character whose house was long the scene of much gaiety and revelry. William H. Townsend was a renowned scholar, raconteur, and lawyer, born in Anderson Company. Educated first in a one room school at Glensboro, he graduated from University of Kentucky Law School in 1912. Among his books was Lincoln and the Bluegrass was published in 1955. His talk on Cassius Clay, "The Lion of White Hall", is now a taped classic. Townsend had the largest private collection of Lincolnania in the United States. Recognized as a leading expert on Abraham Lincoln, Townsend was a founder of the Kentucky Civil War Round Table in 1953. He served as its first president until his death. He was named posthumously to Fayette County Bar's Hall of Fame in 1966.
