Marryat served in the Royal Navy from a young age, seeing action in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. He rose to the rank of captain, and his experiences at sea greatly influenced his later writing. After retiring from the Navy, Marryat turned to writing. His first novel, "Frank Mildmay," was published in 1829 and was an immediate success.
