From dust jacket: Here are further adventures in Mongolia even more exciting than those made famous in the author's "Tents in Mongolia" -- (one of the best-reviewed books of last year, a National Best-Seller and considered by the book-trade to be one of the most beautiful travel books of all time. Haslund hears of a mysterious Mongolian tribe, the Torguts, surviving in the Far West of the country. He resolves to go in search of them. He is offered a job with the famous (1927) expedition of Sven Hedin, going part of the way to the Torgut country. But first he is sent to film the Devil Dancing at the Madarai festival at one of the holiest Oriental monasteries. He makes friends with Yolros Lama, a reincarnation of Buddha, worshipped by millions as a devinity, who predicts good fortune for Haslund's undertaking in the West. This prophecy becomes known throughout the Mongolian world and attends the young man wherever he goes. Whether it protected Haslund in the first desert crossing, where he was in charge of the scientific column, or in the navation of the river Estin-gol, we leave the reader to judge. Certainly it accompanied the author during his arrest by Governor-General Yang of Sinkiang, and during his long stay among the Western Torguts, which is a highlight of the book. Among these people he is made Shaman; he explores the Mongolian steppes, studies their laws and customs from ancient manuscripts, learns their music and reconstructs their amazing history.
