London / Edinburgh: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, Paternoster Row; and Cadell and Co. 10, Price's-Street, Edinburgh, 1826. First Edition in English. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto: 10.5" x 8.25" x 1.75. Illustrated with map. Association copy of Greek-Irish writer and professor, Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), whose pen name was Yakumo Koizumi. Known for his introduction of Japanese culture and literature to the West, Hearn's name is writ large in pencil on the front flyleaf, and title page also bears his stamp.

Contained are the memoirs of the founder and first emperor of the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent, Zehir-Ed-Din Muhammed Baber (1483-1530), descendant of Timur (founder and first ruler of the Timurid dynasty in Central Asia), and Genghis Khan from the Barlas tribe of Mongol origin. A Sunni-Muslim warrior steeped in Persian culture, Emperor Baber built a legacy rich in literature, art, and science, which dramatically influenced Persian culture within the Indian subcontinent.

Beautifully and professionally rebound in tan cotton-linen book cloth and encased in matching custom clamshell box with gilt-stamped leather label by Faenwyl Bindery's Cara Schlesinger of New York, April, 2024. Book spine bears an off-white paper label with title, publisher, and indication of Lafcadio Hearn's association in black text. This copy includes preserved fragments of the original spine laid in within tissue and mylar. Also included are the contemporary boards, onto which one is affixed a vintage newspaper clipping of Hern's Samurai-widow's passing, Setsuko Koizumi (circa 1932). Original boards are wrapped in glassine and enclosed in matching gatefold chemise with brown ribbon pull. A detailed treatment report from Faenwyl Bindery is laid inside box. The textblock includes vintage Time newspaper clipping of Lafcadio Hearn's life and of his son Kazuo Koizumi's book, "Father and I" affixed to the front flyleaf, dated June 17, 1965. A large fold-out map engraving of the countries of Ferghana and Bokhara is at the back in black and white, measuring 11.25 inches tall x 16.25 inches wide. Includes errata, also at back. lxix, 432 pp.

CONDITION: Clamshell box (measuring 11.75 inches tall x 9.25 inches wide x 2.75 inches thick), and enclosures are pristinely fine and absolutely beautiful. Faenwyl Bindery's label is affixed at the foot of the back pastedown. Antiquarian textblock is very good with light chipping and discoloration within the introductory and end pages. Leaves have lightly toned with only occasional and mild foxing. Minor continuous crease occasionally throughout, yet text is uncompromised. Completely unmarked except for the Hearn name written in pencil on the front flyleaf. Hinges are sturdy and binding is quite sound. An absolutely lovely, very special association copy of this first edition in English. Full refund if not satisfied.
