The set is illustrated with a total of 376 maps, including several that fold out. In this standard carto-bibliography are full descriptions of some 1,300 maps from the year 1540 to about 1880. Wheat discusses each map, showing the origins of its date and weighing its significance and accuracy. He also identifies the atlases and books in which the maps can be found.
