Hardback small octavo, no jacket as issued, very good condition, original maroon pictorial cloth cover & spine (gilt lettering), original maroon endpapers, full-page black & white drawings (plates), map, all edges gilt, adverts at rear, pages faintly toned, minor edgewear, owner's written name, protected by removable semiarchival plastic sleeve (acetate). 352 + 32 pp. Possible first U.S. edition (no date, but 1889 or 1890, but variants exist). Eight full-page illustrations (including frontispiece). An historical novel based on true events during the Maori wars in New Zealand during the 1870s, with a focus on the fanatical Hau-Hau Maoris who massacred white settlers. (32-page Scribner & Welford catalogue at rear, including many Henty books.).
