Sobre este item
Very good set of Catlin's classic account of his travels and sojourns with the Native American peoples from 1832-1839.
Second edition with colour illustrations featuring 312 full-colour engravings on 180 plates (not the "400 Coloured Plates" described on the title page and spines). Includes three maps in colour.
The illustrations show portraits of chiefs, warriors, medicine men and women, buffalo and horse hunts, rituals, religious ceremonies, dances, war games, sports, etc. The Native American peoples described include Choctaw, Blackfoot, Ojibwe, Comanche, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Sioux, Seminole, etc. There are several self-portraits of Catlin (Frontispiece, Plates 62 and 132).
First published in 1841 with uncoloured plates, it was published with coloured plates for the first time in 1876. Although the title page lists "1841, Egyptian Hall," and there are no other dates printed in the book, it is believed this set dates from 1892-4.
In publishers black cloth with gilt title on spine and gilt vignette on front cover showing Comanche warriors performing riding tricks, (from Plate 167).
Volume 1 with viii, 264 pages, Plates 1 to 114, and 1 folding map.
Volume 2 with viii, 266 pages, Plates 155 to 312, and 2 maps.
Interior clean and fresh with colour plates bright and vivid.
Heavy set will require extra shipping charges.
