Publisher's green cloth with gold gilt lettering and an illustration stamped to the front board, as well as gold gilt lettering stamped to the spine. Illustrated with twelve black and white plates, including the frontispiece. Very minor rubbing along the edges of the boards; slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally clean and tight. Overall, a very good to near fine copy. Sir Henry Rider Haggard (22 June 1856- 14 May 1925) was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a founder of the Lost World literary genre. This is the first American edition of this book, which was printed at the same time as the UK first, but limited to 1500 copies--there were 5000 copies of the first UK edition. The illustrations were done by W. T. Horton and H. M. Brock. 1911
