Sobre este item
Pierre Loti's book was first published in French in a lavishly bound and color-illustrated volume in 1878. Translation into English by Laura Ensor seems to have appeared in 1897. Subsequent printings are very hard to date as the book was translated into every European language and reprinted during the author's lifetime 222 times. Binding varied, but the many dozens of Rossi and Myrbach designs appear to have been retained. One English-language copy with the same cover as this copy for sale is signed but undated and sells for $1,995. The first owner of this copy for sale dated possession 1913. The cloth cover is in good condition except for the hinges of the spine, which are worn. The corners are not bumped but show wear; the edges, however, show only slight wear. A second owner's stamp appears on the front fly leaf & rear inside cover. Some penciling of unknown origin also appears there. The pages are complete, untorn, and unmarked. Some are lightly age stained but free of foxing. This collectible edition sells below the $125 to $325 asked for copies of similar age and condition.
Sinopse
LOUIS-MARIE-JULIEN VIAUD, "Pierre Loti," was born in Rochefort, of an old French-Protestant family, January 14, 1850. He was connected with the French Navy from 1867 to 1900, and is now a retired officer with full captain's rank. Although of a most energetic character and a veteran of various campaigns - Japan, Tonkin, Senegal, China (1900) - M. Viaud was so timid as a young midshipman that his comrades named him Loti, a small Indian flower which seems ever discreetly to hide itself.
