Sobre este item

London: J. Rivington, L. Hawes, W. Clarke, and R. Collins, W. Johnston, T. Caslon, S. Crowder, T. Longman, and B. Law,, 1771. Sixteenth edition of Greenwood's earliest published work, an English-Latin vocabulary possibly first printed in 1711. Divided into 33 different categories, most of which carry a woodcut illustration, the vocabulary is presented in double column giving the English and Latin words. All early editions are scarce; the earliest recorded is the third edition of 1713. "The burthening of the Memory with more than is necessary at the Entrance upon any study, is certainly a great Discouragement to the Learner. I have therefore, in the present Vocabulary, avoided every Thing that is not of immediate Use, as Foreign to the Design; and industriously omitted that vast heap of Words with which our common Word Books do so frequently swell" (preface). Greenwood opened a boarding school at Woodford in Essex in 1711. In 1721 he was appointed deputy headmaster at St Paul's School in London, retaining the post until his death in 1737. The London Vocabulary was presented "in the style of Comenius's Orbis Pictus and enjoyed great popularity, being reprinted until at least 1828" (ODNB). Duodecimo (141 x 83mm.). Contemporary unlettered sheep, blindstamp double-rule border to sides. Woodcut vignette to title and 25 woodcut illustrations in the text. Ownership inscription of one James Harris dated 1830 to front endpaper. Spine with 10 mm chip at each end, front joint cracked but cords holding firm, rear joint cracked at head. Some surface abrasion to covers and corners worn; internally a very good copy. ESTC T123091, stating "not a reissue of previous editions", locates 6 copies only (one in America), possibly including this one.
