About very good, slightly cocked, soem soiling and a narrow strip of fade to the spine. Maugham's first book, written while he was a medical student at St. Thomas' Hospital in the Lambeth section of London. The protagonist is Liza Kemp, an 18-year old factory worker who lives with her alcoholic mother in Lambeth. A popular girl in the neighborhood, she nonetheless feels increasingly isolated; she and a married man begin seeing each other on the sly; the man rapes and punches her (domestic violence is a continuing theme the of the book) but she continues to be in love with him. She becomes pregnant but suffers a miscarriage and dies as a result.
