A view of the last dispensation of light that will be in the world, etc. Annexed is The dream, first printed in Philadelphia True American. A history of two Jews, in their pursuit after the truth. An account of the people of the catacombs.' This work precedes the most curious era of Gates' life: In 1837, in Philadelphia, Theophilus Gates published the first issue of a tract called Battle-Axe. The publication led to the establishment of a new cult whose members were known as "Battle-Axes" or "Gatesites". The following quotation summarizes one of his core beliefs: 'Among the present fashions and usages of this world that will pass away is that of man and wife, so-called, living in strife and disagreement. Some men and women are as unsuited to one another as a dog and cat, and such marriages are not of God. What a wretch must that man be, that would confine a dog and cat together to bit and tear each other. And is not a man or woman better than a cat or dog.' In keeping with this statement, members of his cult, characterized as "henpecked husbands and unhappy wives", followed the principle that all things were to be shared in common, including husbands and wives, and that no children should be conceived unless the parents were fully prepared to receive them. In addition, his religion had no Sabbath, no baptism, and no preaching which might prevent the individual from attaining the perfect state, rising above all scriptural laws. They established a commune in a place they named Free Love Valley in Chester County, PA, about two miles from Pottstown. The small group aroused anger and resentment among more orthodox preachers in the local area. S&S/AI 44133; Sabin 26758. Scarce. PAIMP 23. Hardcover.
