Original half-leather boards (19th century calf, gilt lettered black leather title labels on spine), b&w engraved frontis portrait plate with facsimile signature inscription,, pp xii, 556, 12, damp staining frontis and title page, boards lightly worn and marked, inscription title page. From the library of the Parliament of Victoria with their shelf label and small gilt stamp on spine, gilt stamp upper board, some ink stamps (some from the Melbourne Public Library). Good condition. Quakers James Backhouse and George Washington Walker were sent to the Australian colonies by the London Society of Friends in the 1830s.They investigated the penal system and the treatment of Aborgines, promoting temperance and preaching to the settlers. The book deals mostly with Walker's time in Tasmania, with travels to New South Wales and to South Africa. Includes separately paginated "Friendly Counsel addressed to the Working Classes, more especially to Newly-Arrived Emigrants" by George Washngton Walker. 1st Edition.
