History, England; 18th Century; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; The Life of Edward Earl of Clarendon, Lord High Chancellor of England and Chancellor of the University of Oxford Bound in full leather, this antique set is a scarce autobiographical work that provides an account of the chancellor's life in two parts, with the Restoration in 1660 as the dividing line between the two. The author also includes a history of the Grand Rebellion, from the Restoration to his Banishment in 1667. The volumes show external age/wear, and are solidly bound with clean, lightly age toned pages. Previous owner's bookplate appears on front endpaper of first volume over stamp with name and address (only stamp appears in second volume). Additional stamps appear on front flyleaves of both volumes. Signature also appears in top right-hand corner of title page of first volume. The books measure approximately 5 1/4" x 8 1/2". Deaccessioned from Trinity College. Provenance, Mrs Morris N Young. , armorial bookplate. "From the description given by the Earl of Clarendon in his autobiography, his father, Henry Hyde, almost certainly suffered from, and died of, angina pectoris. If this is really so, it is the first recorded case"--Garrison-Morton 2884. TeXt quite clean of toning nad foxing. .
