Sobre este item

1794 first UK edition. Volume is very good condition: no interior markings of any kind, most pages are uncut. Text block is soundly sewn with protective cardboard covers but has never been formally bound. Volume 2 of 5 volume set. (Volumes 1-4 are text; volume 5 is index and 39 plates.) This volume is complete as issued with all blanks. Collates: i-vii, 1-561, [2]. Adams was scientific instrument maker to George III. Adams is important in the history of the progress of science as he strongly advocated experimental science. I have provided a page from his lecture: "On The Method of Reasoning in Natural Philosophy" (p. 98 this volume) describing his commitment to experimental science. I cannot overstate the importance of this shift in scientific thinking - relying on experimental data instead of the wisdom of the ancients. The other feature of this volume, besides content, is that it is in its original state. New books sold in 1794 were presented to the buyer in exactly this condition. Plain cardboard boards, sewn text block; untrimmed edges, thus pages remain uncut. Volume has never been bound beyond this original state. Also a testament to the quality of paper making. Almost no foxing; pages remain supple; print is easily readable. A rare original specimen of the printing arts to be sure. Suitable for collecting on that point alone. This book is uncommon. Please see images of the book you will receive. Volume 3 is listed also. Feel free to inquire.
