Sobre este item

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1867. First Edition. First edition, mixed first and second issue, with variant (a) of plates facing p. 297 and p. 370 but second issue of plate facing p. 120. Octavo (23 cm). In original blue publisher's cloth, decorated in gilt on spine and front boards; plain endpapers; I: [4], 384 pp., II: [4], 384 pp; 64 illustrations, including 16 inserted plates and 16 in-text wood engravings in each volume. Internally clean and complete apart from the absence of the final ad leaf (which Sadleir writes is 'irregular in its appearance'), but both volumes rubbed, cloth somewhat stained, hinges in vol. I cracking but holding, corners reinforced on both volumes and vol. II neatly rebacked: a Good or better copy.

Bookplate of W[illiam] D[alziel] MacKenzie of Fawley Court, the nephew of civil engineer and railway builder William MacKenzie, in both volumes.

This conclusion to Trollope's Barsetshire series, illustrated by George H. Thomas, was originally issued in parts, with the first book issue bound up from copies in wrappers. Sadleir writes that the first and second issues in bound form can be distinguished only by the presence of stab holes; this copy shows stab holes in gatherings D and E of vol. I but not elsewhere. It has the points of first edition, including "The right of Translation is reserved" on title page versos, perfect 'D' on p.157, vol. I, and "Crawley" on p.298, vol. II. SADLEIR (Trollope) 26.

Sinopse

Anthony Trollope was a masterful satirist with an unerring eye for the most intrinsic details of human behavior and an imaginative grasp of the preoccupations of nineteenth-century English novels. In The Last Chronicle of Barset , Mr. Crawley, curate of Hogglestock, falls deeply into debt, bringing suffering to himself and his family. To make matters worse, he is accused of theft, can't remember where he got the counterfeit check he is alleged to have stolen, and must stand trial. Trollope's powerful portrait of this complex man-gloomy, brooding, and proud, moving relentlessly from one humiliation to another-achieves tragic dimensions.
