Christianity remained the dominant religion around the Mediterranean even when the western half of the Roman Empire later crumbled, until peoples of a different religion appeared on the coasts in the seventh century. The Persians were still defeated, the Arabs were not. The long seventh century, or how Christianity and Islam divided power, shows how the Christian commonwealth around the Mediterranean, which emerged in the fourth century, fell apart between 600 and 750. In 600 Christianity still seemed unthreatened everywhere and forever the state religion, but in 750 the sea was divided between Christianity and Islam, almost as it is divided today. State and religion remained intertwined, but in addition to the Christian states in the north, Islam was now the state religion in the south.
