Along with Der grüne Heinrich, this is among the finest of Keller's novels. Illustrated with 10 full-page etchings by the Austrian master engraver Alfred Cossmann (1870-1951). In the second half of the 20th century he became an important representative of the 'Vienna school of copper engraving'. Each plate signed and numbered in pencil by Cossmann, all protected by tissue guard. This deluxe edition was published as Auflage I (edition I) limited to 20 copies, and Auflage II (edition II) limited to 100 copies, this being the latter with etchings printed on hand-made Zanders paper. Edition I was printed on Japan paper. Text in German, Gothic script. Dust wrapper in good-, book in overall very good condition.
