New York: W. W. Norton & Co., 1949. Very Good, lacking the dust jacket, wear to cloth at spine ends, slight lean, browning to front end pages from old newspaper article laid in. With TLS from Lillian Smith to Rebecca M. Gershon of Atlanta on Smith's Old Screamer Mountain, Clayton, Georgia stationery, dated November 14, 1949 - "Dear Rebecca, I have read your beautiful letter to my brothers and sisters who were as deeply moved by it as was I. Thank you for writing it, and especially for writing it at the time that you did. Sincerely yours, Lillian- Lillian Smith". Laid in with this letter is a newspaper clipping of a letter to the editor of the Atlanta Constitution published in November 1949 that Smith had written, titled "Explaining Her Book", the browned clipping the cause of browning to the TLS and the front end pages. A significant Civil Rights association, Rebecca M. Gershon became known for her work in the Jewish community and the struggle for Civil Rights in the South. Her ownership signature dated October 1949 as well as ownership signature of noted historian John K. Alexander to front end pages. . SIGNED. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.
