London: Chatto & Windus,, 1882. First edition in book form. It was first published serially in Good Words from May to December 1882. The first US edition was Harper's, in the usual single-volume format, published just after the UK edition, in late September 1882. Two volumes in 1, small quarto (170 x 124 mm). Contemporary grey-green half calf by Birdsall & Son, Northampton, titles and decorative tooling in gilt to spine, green cloth boards, yellow edges. Wood-engraved frontispiece after a drawing by Millais. Armorial bookplate of Lord Esmé S. Gordon to front pastedown. Head of spine sometime expertly repaired, lightly rubbed, faint scattered spotting, else clean and unmarked; a very good copy. Sadleir, Trollope 65.
