Facsimile of the very first Dan Dare story, which was renamed Voyage to Venus by Titan Books and reprinted in two volumes. This first part was reprinted from the Eagle Number 1, 14th of April 1950, to Number 40, 12th of January 1951. Includes a Who's who in Dan Dare and an article about the genesis of Dan Dare, illustrated with rarely seen artwork and merchandise. Now scarce. Fine condition in a fine dustwrapper.

The rare lifetime issue was self-published by Webber and is a soft ground etching. This is an extremely rare hand colored copy, which Sir Maurice Holmes states in his "Captain James Cook RN FRS, A Bibliographical Excursion" (1952) that the original drawings were "etched and coloured by himself". Impression mark 450 x 323 mm with large margins, 539 x 390 mm. With notations in pencil, quite possibly by Webber - "Pl.13" penciled in the top right corner, along with "1st Augt. 1788" in the lower right. Soft ground etching with hand color. Watermark J. Chicago: Lakeside Press, 1873. First edition. signed by the author along with a personalized inscription to Parker Pillsbury, dated April 14, 1875. Scarce Victorian era lost world fantasy by this Chicago author and artist - the story of a lost race of spindly giants living on an island at the North Pole. Illustrated by the author with twelve engravings plus an engraved title printed in black and gilt on blue paper. The story is presented as a true event by an Alabama slave whose master sets him free when he finishes the narrative. Parker Pillsbury, to whom the book is inscribed, was a radical preacher and advocate of nonresistance whose strong abolitionist views resulted in his ejection from the Congregational Church.
