Joseph Le Conte [1823-1901] arrived in Berkeley in 1869 as a Professor of geology, natural history and botany with the newly established University of California. In 1870, he was invited by several students to join them on a four week camping trip to Yosemite and the High Sierra. This trip was his first visit to Yosemite, which began a lifetime love affair with preserving the Valley. While John Muir is more closely associated with promoting the establishment of national parks, Le Conte was instrumental in laying the foundations for the Yosemite National Park in 1890. He co-founded the Sierra Club with John Muir. He died in Yosemite of a heart attack in 1901.

Francis Peloubet Farquhar (1887-1974) was a mountaineer, environmentalist, historian, author and certified public accountant. He was active in the Sierra Club from the early 1920's for the rest of his life. He was also active in the California Historical Society and the San Francisco based California Academy of Sciences.
