Iosif Samuilovich Shklovskii was a Soviet astronomer and astrophysicist and is remembered for work in theoretical astrophysics and other topics, as well as for his 1962 book on extraterrestrial life, the revised and expanded version of which was co-authored by American astronomer Carl Sagan in 1966 as Intelligent Life in the Universe. This was the first comprehensive discussion of this field: the first popular and accurate modern discussion of the entire panorama of natural evolution--including the origins of the universe, the evolution of stars and planets, the beginnings of life on earth, and the development of intelligence and technical civilizations among galactic communities. Included is a great deal of new material, some never before published in any form and some previously available only in technical journals inaccessible to the general reader. The book is written primarily for the intelligent layperson. Where necessary, details have been included in a non-technical way so, that the popular reader can critically judge the train of argument.
