New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1888. First edition, 1888. Inscription to Miss Kate Foote, with the Compliments of the Author [not signed] at top of title page. Kate Foote (later Kate Foote Coe], a cousin of the Beecher family including Harriet Beecher Stowe. Born in Guilford, Connecticut, she traveled south during the Civil War to teach slaves, later taught Native American children in the west, and traveled further to Alaska and Japan with the purpose of furthering education. Nicely bound worn copy in three quarter smooth burgundy leather over marbled boards, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, 414 pages. Leather scuffed and unevenly faded, edges rubbed, hinges good, text block sound, front free endpaper detached but present, pages lightly age-toned but clean, no other names or markings.. Inscribed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
