Contemporary half red roan over marbled boards, spines with raised bands and gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 109 engraved plates and maps by E. Finden and others after Brockedon, comprising 12 title-vignettes, 13 maps with the routes hand coloured in outline (one of which is double-page an uncoloured), and 84 plates. Ex libris Aughentaine, with their bookplate to front paste down in each volume. Occasional spotting (heavier in vol. 2). An illustrated work on 12 mountain passes including the Little Saint Bernard, the Mont Genevre, the Mont Cenis, the Mont Saint Gothard, the Great Saint Bernard, the Monte Stelvio, the Cornice, the Grimsel and the Gries, the Bernardine and the Splugen, the Brenner, the Tende and the Argentiere and the Simplon, each pass with a map. The English painter, writer and inventor William Brockedon traversed the Alps 58 times, crossing more than 40 different passes, in the course of his researches.

Robert Frew has been trading in antiquarian books since 1975, starting out from an open market in Camden Lock, followed by shops in Primrose Hill, in Great Russell Street by the British Museum, Maddox Street Mayfair and now on the borders of South Kensington and Knightsbridge. Not to mention stints in Portobello Road and Safe Store Battersea.We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association, of which Robert Frew is a past president.We Exhibit at most of the major international ILAB fairs in America, often in Europe and sometimes in the Middle and Far East. We are also members of the PBFA, exhibiting in London and occasionally in the provinces.
