Sobre este item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2002. First edition. Fine in fine dust jacket.. Signed first printing of this haunting and surreal reflection on the Japanese American internment during WWII, with original self-portrait of Allen Say. Allen Say, born in Yokohama, Japan in 1937, dreamed of becoming an artist from a young age. Before entering the world of children's book illustration, Say worked as a sign-painter and as a photographer, his skills behind the lens landing him a spot in the military newspaper STARS AND STRIPES. He illustrated his first children's book in 1972, and has earned a Caldecott Medal and a Caldecott Honor, among other accolades; Say's work is often based on personal experiences or the stories of family members, and his illustrations are noted for merging "the real and the surreal in his books, using photographs, pen-and-ink sketches, and watercolor paintings to illustrate them" (Oregon Encyclopedia). 11'' x 9''. Original cloth-backed boards. Original unclipped ($17.00) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. 32 pages. Signed by Say with self-portrait to dedication page. Tight.

Sinopse

In dreamlike sequences, a man symbolically confronts the trauma of his family’s incarceration in the Japanese internment camps during World War II. This infamous event is made emotionally clear through his meeting a group of children all with strange name tags pinned to their coats. The man feels the helplessness of the children. Finally, desperately he releases the name tags like birds into the air to find their way home with the hope for a time when Americans will be seen as one people—not judged, mistrusted, or segregated because of their individual heritage. Sixty years after thousands of Japanese Americans were unjustly imprisoned, the cogent prose and haunting paintings of renowned author and illustrator Allen Say remind readers of a dark chapter in America’s history.
