In dust jacket with edgewear. Hardcover. 504 pp. with bibiliography, index. With 250 illustrations, many of which are reproductions of rare early woodcuts. The classic work on the history of magic, magical idea and manisfestations, popular as it is presented in accessible, readable format. Seligmann begins with examinations of ancient cultures in Mesopotamia, Persia, The Hebrews, Egypt, Greece, and the Roma Empire and gnosticism. There is a full section on alchemy as well a son the Middle A ges, the Devil, Witchcraft, diabolic rites, notable persons such as The Magus, Paracelcus, Nostradamus, Trithemius and others; cabala, magical arts, reformers and the 18th century.
