An undated likely first edition (1906) of Volume One only (of three) of Thomas Babington Macaulay's influential History of England. Written from a Whig point of view, this provides a detailed look at the history of England from 1685 to 1702. With an unattributed introduction. First issued by Everyman's Library in 1906 in three volumes, this work was later issued in four volumes. Everyman's Library #34, an entry in EL's History series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In flatback binding style 1, full scarlet cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, brown topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Lacks the dust jacket. --- With prior owner's signature to both front free endpaper and title page, and with a missing half title page. Some leaves at front of the book have worked loose and have been tipped back into the binding; discreet Harvard bookseller label pasted to rear endpaper. With a couple of black spots to cover, otherwise a sturdy, tightly-bound copy.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall); xii, 804 pages .

This is another great 5 volume set of English History from a Whig and political view from a standpoint other than the what you normally would read.I would love it in my collection and may have to seriously entertain its purchase.C.E.HUGGINS RARE BOOKS
