Sobre este item

London: Macmillan, 1892 First edition of a scarce book. This title eluded Sadleir, and OCLC lists six copies in American libraries. Publisher's green diaper cloth. Spine and covers stamped in gilt. . Three volumes, twelvemo. Spines cocked, endpapers foxed, back hinge of Volume III cracked. A very good copy. Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was born in Scotland. Her first novel, Passages in the Life of Margaret Maitland (1849) attracted the attention of both Charles Dickens and Charlotte Brontë. She worked extensively for the publishing firm of Blackwood's, becoming as she described it the "general utility woman," sometimes contributing as much as one third of their periodical. In later life she became the friend of Thomas Carlyle. As the sole breadwinner responsible for an alcoholic brother and several children, she wrote constantly to make ends meet, and her publications numbered around ninety. At the end of her life, she regarded her work as generally a failure. Her tales of the supernatural, however, have recently been republished and are highly regarded. Tennyson, Gladstone and Darwin all praised her work.

Sobre Michael R. Thompson, Booksellers, ABAA/ILAB

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietor: Carol Sandberg
