Sobre este item

London: Reeves and Turner, 1896. Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 7". Unnamed. A charming eighth edition of William Chaffers' 'Hall Marks on Gold and Silver Plate', a comprehensive guide complete with illustrations and a folding reference chart of hallmarks. Complete with an introductory essay by Christopher A. Markham. Collated complete with frontispiece, illustrations, 12 plates of 'French Hall Marks', and a folding four panel chart plate of hallmarks at rear. Within this text, William Chaffers the leading authority on the subject, provides a comprehensive and invaluable guide to 'official and other marks' found on works of gold and silver plate, complete with helpful illustrations and a folding reference chart of hallmarks. As the descendant of Richard Chaffers, whose company 'Richard Chaffers and Company' was the first to make phosphatic porcelain and produce steatitic, or soaprock, porcelain in 1756, William Chaffers had an extensive interest in not only gold and silver, but also pottery. He hence also produced '"Marks and Monograms on Pottery and Porcelain of the Renaissance and Modern Periods" that served as a companion to this copy on gold and silver plate. In a brown full cloth binding with gilt stamped title to the front board and spine. Gilded decoration to the front and spine, with gilded 'Arms of the Goldsmiths' Company' and border to the front board. Gilded page edges. Externally generally smart. Slight rubbing to the front and rear joint and extremities. Bumping to the head and tail of spine and extremities. Tidemark to the top of front board, near the inner edge, and small tidemarks to the back board. Blind stamped booksellers stamp to upper fore-edge recto of the front free-endpaper: 'Lufton Bros., Burnley'. Small pencil markings to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Frontispiece has a complete tissue guard. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Creasing to gutter throughout, not affecting the text. Pages are very bright with the odd spot throughout. Spotting to the fore-edge of pages, only visible to text block. Heavier spotting to the front and last few pages. Small loss to bottom edge of pages xxxiii/xxxiv and xxxv/xxxvi. Appearance of cut page between pages x and xi, but no page or plate listed as missing. Very Good
