Incredible quantities of gold were mined in and about Central City, Colorado in the years following the discovery of the mineral there in 1859. Caroline Bancroft's history of the area and the mines includes numerous b&w plates depicting scenes as the town grew from camp to bustling city. With maps at endpapers. Signed by Miss Bancroft on half title page in red ink. --- In full red cloth-covered boards with titling gilt-stamped on spine. Dust jacket features color painting by R. Garrett Johnson. --- An excellent, well-preserved copy lacking markings or noticeable damages.
