Red and green morocco labels.All edges marbled. 8v0. 5"x8". The First Edition in English - the First Edition having been published in Madrid 1601-1615. Here, translated into English by Capt. John Stevens. Illustrated by 3 folding engraved maps,12 folding engraved plates and 2 single,full page engravings. Lacking the third single full page plate of 5 small portraits (Vol.5). Renowned primary account of the early Spanish conquest of the New World. "A grand chorus of writers, from Nicholas Antonio down to Thomas W. Field, unite in their testimony as to the fidelity of this Prince of Historians. He was successively employed as historiographer by Philip II, III, and IV, and having access to every available source of information, made free use of many original documents which had never before been printed, and which no longer exist in MS. His works embrace a large part of the MS. 'Chronicle' of B. de las Casa, and almost the entire MS. 'Relacion' of Palacio is incorporated with his fourth decade" (Sabin). "His work is the most complete of all those which we possess upon that subject of the epoch it embraces" (Field). Field 691 (later ed); Hill p 143; Palau 114314; Sabin 31557 Usual rubbing, scuffing to covers of this age. Vol.IV presents accentuated darkening along with well disposed cracking and small gouge to calf. Mild chip to Headpiece of Vol. VI.Small, well executed repair to short marginal tear of folding map at Frontis of Vol. IV (South America )which also presents some mild, usual creasing at gutter. Sporadic marginal/non-obtrusive annotations in period ink throughout. Several instances of more contemporary pencil annotations. Bookplates of Victorian Novelist, Robert Frederick Boyle to Front-Pastedowns of all volumes. Small stamp of more contemporary owner to FFEP's of all volumes. A Very Good, exceptionally well bound and preserved set with bright, crisp pages and plates.
