DESCRIPTION

Book measures 170mm x 115mm approximately.

Superbly bound by Bumpus in dark green mottled calf. Spine with five gilt-ruled raised bands with elaborate gilt decoration to compartments and twin tan title and author labels. Triple gilt-ruled borders to both boards and gilt-ruled boarders and cornices to inner boards.

Plain end-papers to front and rear. All page edges in gilt.

CONDITION

Very tight and firm with minor rubbing to upper and lower hinges. Occasional slight marks or nicks to boards and very minor bumping to lower corners. Internally the pages are remarkably fresh, bright and crisp with only a very occasional foxing spot and some "shadowing" to end-papers. A lovely binding in very nice condition.

Please refer to the photo images for a clear indication of both condition and content.

INTERESTING

Margaret Barber (1869 to 1901) pseudonym Michael Fairless was born in West Yorkshire, the youngest of three daughters. She was initially tutored at home by her mother. She became aware of a spinal condition and her health continued to deteriorate, including her sight and she was in continual need of care.

Unable to continue her charitable work, Barber took up writing under the pseudonym Michael Fairless. Her first book was the religious romance The Gathering of Brother Hilarius (1901) but it was The Roadmender (1902) that achieved a wild success, being reprinted 31 times in 10 years.
