Pasted to the inside cover is the bookplate of Louis Agassiz Shaw, co-inventor (along with Philip Drinker) of the iron lung in 1928. 394 lightly tanned pages followed by several pages of publisher advertisements. Some rubbing wear to maroon cover. We noted some red pencil marks to equations on page 175. Some mild foxing to endpapers. A poor quality rubber cement repair has been made to inside cover and title page, so residue is visible on the seams of those pages and title page does not open flat. Shaw bookplate has caused a darkened area the shape of the bookplate, paste residue on bookplate. Small green stamp on fep, penciled price, penciled price on page v. Black and white illustrations and decorations throughout and some gorgeous vibrant full page, full color illustrations on glossy stock. Dark green cloth with black titles. 124 pages. Bumped and worn corners and head and heel of spine. Endpapers are tanned; booksellers penciled notation on rear endpage. The title page and pages 13 and 19 have some very light fingermarks. This book details a wealth of information on the geology of several regions of the United States, most notably Washington, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. It is filled with maps and other illustrations. The text is a strange mix, with the majority in English, but a substantial amount in French as well. I can't find a pattern in this, and it is not simply a bilingual printing. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. 529 pp. A few marks on the endpapers, but the core text pages are tight and clean. Front board is literally hanging on by a thread, and should be considered detached. The spine covering is broken in several places and is also in imminent danger of being lost.
