This set is a unique presentation copy signed 1942, Published for the Actuarial Society of America , New York by The Macmillan Company, Toronto, Canada Vol 1 â€" Maroon Morocco with gilt lettering and gilt page ends all around Vol 2 â€" maroon cloth with gilt lettering on spine Vol 1 has a note tipped in and signed by the author stating that it was a specially bound presentation copy from the publisher Vol 2 was the author's working copy of Section B of the first volume and shows his handwritten notes throughout Both volumes are in fine condition, with no other marks or damage 875" x 6" x 15"

Hugh Herbert Wolfenden (1892 â€" 1968) was a Canadian actuary and statistician, known primarily as a scholar and historian of the statistical research of Erastus L De Forest Born in England, he immigrated to Canada at the age of seventeen and worked as an actuary For over twenty-five years, he was a consulting actuary in Toronto In 1925 when four Protestant denominations merged into the United Church of Canada, he served as a consulting actuary in merging together the retirement plans of the clergy in the four different denominations He retired in 1951

He published numerous articles in actuarial and statistical journals and was a vice-president of the Actuarial Society of America in 1940â€"1942 He was elected a Fellow of three learned societies: the Institute of Actuaries, the Royal Statistical Society, and the Society of Actuaries
