James Brown (no, not that James Brown!) was a professional forester on the Arniston Estate in Midlothian and wood manager to the Earl of Seafield, as well as the first president of the Scottish Arboricultural Society, established in 1854. The present book, first published in 1847, provides practical guidnace on how to create and manage a profitable plantation in temperate climates based on scientific principles of the time. It was one of the most influential and important books on the subject in its day, having arisen from a breeding ground of enthusiasm among seed collectors for collecting North American species, the most famous of whom was David Douglas for introducting Douglas fir and sitka spruce.
