First edition, small 4to, pp. viii, 302, [2]; photographic illustrations, some in color, throughout; original black pictorial boards, some edge wear, else a fine copy. Signed by the author and R. P. Gale. The illustrations are grouped into 4 sections, portraying the setting of the Minnesota story, the settlement and life on the land, the social institutions, and the ways in which the people of the state earn their living and provide for others. The text contains excerpts from the writing of others including a French voyageurs' canoeing song, T.S. Eliot, and various pioneers as well as the author's own explanatory comments.
