Sobre este item

Chez Huart & Moreau. Very Good-. 1752. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. [2]ff, xliv & 159; [2] & 275 pages; Title pages printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece to the first volume (engraved by L[ouis-Claude) Legrand after a drawing by B(ernard) Picart), printed half titles present in both volumes. Contemprary decoratively mottled calf, raised bands, gilt decorative tooling stamped in spine panels, title and volume number stamped on red leather slips mounted to the second and third panels of each volume -- swirl-marbled endpapers & edges of the text blocks decoratively marbled to match, silk ribbon bookmarks present. Significant wear and rubbing, with small portions of the leather missing at the tops an bottom spine panels (especially of the first volume). Somewhat the worse for wear, but still a handsome little set -- with charming figured woodcut headpieces to the fables. With a particularly interesting American provenance -- each set bears multiple signatures in ink of Abraham Brown of Bordentown, New Jersey. The longest signature, to the upper margin of the blank leaf before the half title in the first volume, is quite specific: "Abraham Brown / Borden town / November 29 / 1796." In addition to the signature with a pen flourish transcribed above, there are three Abraham Brown signatures in the second volume. The first of these is also dated "1796." It appears that this 1752 edition of La Fontaine was shared by several booksellers in Paris, each with a separate imprint specified on the title page -- for this particular bookseller/publisher, see OCLC: 783536309 [locating a single copy of volume II only, at Brandeis. The Brandeis copy of the first volume has the imprint of (Michel-Antoine) David, see OCLC 783579165]. There was an "Abraham Brown" who was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson as one of six Commissioners of Bankruptcy in New Jersey in 1802. In his letter recommending the six to President Jefferson, Joseph Bloomfield [fourth Governor of New Jersey] wrote to Jefferson: "Mr. Brown, is a Lawyer, & has been Secretary to the Commissioners of Bankruptcy in West-Jersey, is well acquainted with the duties & will, there is no doubt, give universal satisfaction." .
