Tree calf binding, protective deckling to external page edges, marbled end papers, morocco label to spine. 660 pages plus the Succession of Colonels, Casualties, and Alterations and Additions While printing; bound in quarto, approximately 8.5 inches by 5.25 inches. Condition notes: Leather rubbed but sound, spine strip repaired, label good. Clean, bright pages, text block sound. Front board attached by cords, but leather very worn along hinge. I have not found any annotations.

Tree calf binding, gilt decoration, marbled end papers, morocco label to spine. 756 pages; bound in quarto, approximately 9 inches by 5.5 inches. Condition notes: A few corrections in ink (not a modern hand) here and there (eg to Contents pages). Front board detached, with front free end paper. Spine broken, some loss at top and bottom, spine strip rubbed and rather crumbly. Leather rubbed but sound. Clean, bright pages, text block sound.

Hardcover complicated subjects in a military manual for voluntary officer aspirants and officers of the reserve status of the foot artillery, 8th edition, German text, f/o map, 608pps + index, ads, 246 illustrations, interesting views of artillery strategies in light of the enormous use of this weaponry on the Western Front, two loosely inserted commentaries. VG, as some wear but clean, intact and gutters unhampered. Rare.

Finely bound in contemporary full brown pebble grained morocco. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Gilt lettering. Boards with triple blind ruled borders and gilt stamped school arms in centre. All edges gilt. Inner dentelles gilt. Eton School prize label on front paste down endpaper. Some minor rubbing to extremities but overall a very good, bright copy.:

Brown cloth with gilt spine and red cloth with gilt spine and front board (respectively). 100pp; 96pp. Top edge gilt (second volume only). Color frontispieces, numerous full-page plates (many color). Very good overall. Mild edgewear and bit of scuffing, and spine tail of second volume dinged. First edition of each volume, tight and nice -- both ex-library, but with very few and mostly removed markings. Both are near fine internally, clean and handsome and with flawless color plates -- a lovely set despite mild ex-library. Rather scarce.

London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co., 1872 First edition hardcover in small decorated blindstamped boards. An early memoir of the battlefields of the Franco-Prussian war. 119 pp. plus 3 pp. of advertisements. Some full page illustrations. Book measures 6.5" by 4.5". The binding is cracked and quite shaken, but holding. There is wear and soiling to boards, two names and some figures on the rear of the frontispiece. A Fair to Good copy. Photographs on request.

1886 hardcover by Fishkill Times, New York. Reprint of the 1828 first edition with an "Additional Appendix." I have compared this with the 1828 original and the text is the same while the plates are different. Condition is a mixed bag. At some point this volume was recased using original boards and it was expertly done. Boards show more than the usual stains. Interior is much better: has gift inscription dated 1929 and no other writing. Publisher was newspaper and the materials used are consistent with that. Paper is thin and now slightly brittle. Title page and table of contents both show small closed edge tears. Endpapers and plates are published on a delightful variety of colored papers: endpapers are salmon, plates are on yellow, pink and blue paper. Text is printed in columns like a newspaper article. Binding is tight and was probably resewn. Paginates: blank, (i)-xi, (12)-152, blank, includes frontis and 3 unpaginated plates. Numerous other plates inserted in text.
