1664 1ed Oliver Cromwell Parliament Robert Pugh Attack on George Bate Elenchus George Bate, sometimes known as Bates, was a 17th-century personal physician to Oliver Cromwell. Unfortunately, much controversy and speculation circles Bate and the untimely death of Cromwell. The controversy arises because of Bate's defense of the King's disagreements with the English Parliament, making many historians unsure who Bate sided with politically. Bate published a book entitled 'Elenchus Motuum' defending the King but it also included a thorough description of the execution of Charles I.
Robert Pugh, a Jesuit royalist, published a critical attack on 'Elenchus' – a work discussing many of Bate's medical practices, English politics, and events that would eventually lead to the Popish Plot.
