This single sheet is tipped in and the booksellers dispute Babbage's claim that they would not stock his book, an indignant retort! This is regarded as the earliest paper on the scientific management of factories and of course was influential in the industrial activities of the period. Babbage is now considered to be the "father of computers", and this was his seminal work. The Introduction to the book states, "The present volume may be considered one of the consequences that have resulted from the Calculating-Engine the construction of which I have been so long superintending".
