Sobre este item

This is an antique book about post-Civil War reconstruction, "DIXIE AFTER THE WAR - An Exposition of Social Conditions Existing in the South During the Twelve Years Succeeding the Fall of Richmond" by Myrta Lockett Avary. 1906 1st edition, 1st printing (September); Doubleday, Page & Company; New York. The book features a photographic frontispiece portrait of Confederate States President Jefferson Davis, and many other illustrations. Gilt top page edges. From the Introduction: "No other book hitherto published portrays so fully and graphically the social conditions existing in the South for the Twelve years following the fall of Richmond, none so vividly presents race problems." Here are some examples of the contents: The Falling Cross; When This Cruel War is Over; The Army of the Union - The Children and the Flag; The Coming of Lincoln; The Last Capital of the Confederacy; The Counsel of Lee; The Wrath of the North; The Chaining of Jefferson Davis; Our Friends, the Enemy; Tournaments and Starvation Parties; The Bondage of the Free; Back to Voodooism; The Prisoner of Fortress Monroe; Reconstruction Oratory; The Prisoner Free...and more. Condition: There is some "bubbling" beneath the cloth at the top-left quadrant of the front cover, and at the bottom half of the back cover. Bright gilt top page edges. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only some foxing to the frontispiece and to the tissue guard over it. Nice old bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Small, light stain spot at the top-right corner of the front cover. Some pages are still attached along the outer edge. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
