The book features a photographic frontispiece portrait of Confederate States President Jefferson Davis, and many other illustrations. Gilt top page edges. From the Introduction: "No other book hitherto published portrays so fully and graphically the social conditions existing in the South for the Twelve years following the fall of Richmond, none so vividly presents race problems." Condition: There is some "bubbling" beneath the cloth at the top-left quadrant of the front cover, and at the bottom half of the back cover. Bright gilt top page edges. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only some foxing to the frontispiece and to the tissue guard over it. Nice old bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Small, light stain spot at the top-right corner of the front cover. Some pages are still attached along the outer edge. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
